The gospel for this Sunday continues Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. Here he comments on several of the 10 commandments and makes clear that following God’s law is not as simple as we might think. Some of us will be able to follow the letter of the law. But Jesus has higher hopes for his followers. Where the law says “Do not murder,” Jesus says “Do not be angry with a brother or sister.” The way he puts it, it looks like no one will be able to pass this test. Jonathan’s sermon is titled “New Rules,” and he will be preaching from Matthew 5:21-26.
It’s also Scout Sunday, so we’ll be joined by the boys of Troop 783 and their families. The service will open with the presentation of the colors, the Scout oath and law, and the Pledge of Allegiance. We have many in our congregation who have been part of the Scouting movement, including a number of Eagle Scouts. We are fortunate to be able to support the growth and development of so many young people over the years. Cubs, Webelos, Brownies and Girl Scouts are also welcome!
Valentines are in the air, so we also celebrate Golden Anniversary Sunday, giving thanks for loving couples in our church family who have been married for fifty years or more. We give thanks for the examples of their love and care with each other and honor their witness among us. Please join us for cake after the morning services!
After 3rd service, don’t forget our Second Sunday Supper, with all you can eat roast chicken, rice and salad from El Pollo Inka for just $5/person or $15/family. We hope to see you there!
See you at church!
