September 2025

September 7, 2025 –Jonathan Chute, “Informed Consent”

Sermon: sermon

This Sunday’s gospel finds Jesus offering words of caution to the growing numbers of people following after him. He wants to be sure that they understand the seriousness and urgency of his mission. In words that sound hard – even harsh – Jesus makes it clear that there is a price to be paid for genuine faithfulness. No one should become a follower without knowing what lies ahead. Luke 14:25-33 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Informed Consent.”

September 14, 2025 –Jonathan Chute, “Party Time?”

Sermon: sermon

This week’s gospel includes two of Jesus’ most well-known parables, the lost sheep and the lost coin. The determination of the shepherd to find the sheep is relentless and risky. The joy of the woman over the discovery of the coin is extravagant. But Jesus says that they show us the joy of God at finding us when we are lost. Luke 15:1-10 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Party Time?”

September 21, 2025 –Jonathan Chute, “Cooking the Books”

Sermon: sermon

The gospel for this Sunday is one of the strangest and hardest of Jesus’ parables. It tells the story of a rich man and his lazy – and dishonest – manager. When the manager is caught stealing we expect the rich man to punish him severely. Instead he praises his manager for his shrewdness. The parable seems to encourage behavior we would hardly want to follow – even less to encourage! What is Jesus trying to tell us? Luke 16:1-13 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Cooking the Books.”

September 28, 2025 –Jonathan Chute, “Short-Sighted”

Sermon: sermon

This week’s gospel tells a story of two men of very different circumstances, who yet live within an arm’s reach. It shows us a picture of the wide gulf which can separate us from each other in this life, and how our relationships here on earth may carry over to eternity. Luke 16:19-31 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Short-sighted.”
