~Sunday Morning Bible Study Class
LENTEN STUDY: Starting March 10th, the Seekers and Searchers will be engaging in a six-week Lenten study leading up to the holy week that climaxes with Easter Sunday, April 21. We will be using Amy-Jill Levine’s new book “Entering the Passion of Jesus.” Amy is a Jewish scholar and Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and the College of Arts and Science. This is not your ordinary Lenten study. We will read the passion stories with compassion as we find how much more meaningful they become: as we learn the history behind the texts themselves to see what brilliant writers the Evangelists were. We will find ways to understand and question our own lives as we read the stories of Jesus’ trials and choices. We will be challenged to examine our consciences and will emerge with a deeper relationship with Jesus and with others in the world. Aldersgate room every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. beginning March 10 through April 14.
We are also using a book called “Hanging by a Thread” by Samuel Wells, whose premise is that the cross was once an answer and now has become a question. “Why the Cross?” is an exciting exploration that we will enjoy pursuing this Lenten season. There are many answers that scholars and
laymen have considered over the centuries. Wells contends the answer lies in considering not what “God has done ‘for’ us by being on the cross,” but that the cross represents that “God wants to be ‘with us’ no matter what.” “This transformation from ‘for’ to ‘with’ discloses a profound, moving and inspiring vision of what the central event of the Christian faith was truly about.”
