May 13, 2018 – Jonathan Chute “Come Again?”
Sermon: sermon
The scripture describes Jesus’ departure from the disciples, forty days after Easter. He has come to them a number of times since his resurrection, working to help them understand what has happened. In his final conversation he tells them to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Spirit. They want to know if he will finally get around to fulfilling the hopes they had for the Messiah. Will he restore the nation? Will he establish justice and peace? When will it be? Jesus says that they do not get to know these things ahead of time. They are told simply to wait. They didn’t like it any more than we do. Acts 1:1-11 provides the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Come Again?”

May 20, 2018 – Jonathan Chute “Crossing Over”
Sermon: sermon
The scripture describes the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples fifty days after Easter. They are in Jerusalem for Pentecost, a harvest festival, along with Jews from around the known world. As the Spirit descends upon them the disciples begin to speak, and those who are gathered hear them in their own native languages. Whether the miracle was in the speaking or in the hearing is hard to tell. Either way, God demonstrates an interest in creating community across all kinds of lines. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Acts 2:1-18, “Crossing Over.”

May 27, 2018 – Jonathan chute “The Faces of God”
Sermon: sermon
The scripture portrays a scene of drama and mystery. A man named Isaiah experiences a vision of God in the Temple. It terrifies him. He knows his nation is in trouble, and glimpsing the holiness of God doesn’t make make him feel any better about it. Over the ages, people have pictured God in many different ways, and used a variety names for the Holy. Isaiah’s vision reminds us that there is always more to God than we could ever expect. Isaiah is still terrified, but when he hears God asking for help, he responds with courage he did not know he possessed. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Isaiah 6:1-8, “The Faces of God.”
