June 5, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “The End of Babel”
Sermon: sermon
Pentecost Sunday
This Sunday’s scripture describes the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples, fifty days after Easter. It calls to mind another day, when God scattered the human family and confused our language to prevent the building of the Tower of Babel. At Pentecost, God gathers the human family and helps people from different cultures hear the gospel in their own language. It is a picture of inclusion that will both encourage and confound the church for about the next two thousand years. Acts 2:1-18 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “The End of Babel.”

June 12, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Here, There and Everywhere”
Sermon: sermon
It’s Trinity Sunday, an occasion for appreciating the mystery and wonder of God. Appropriate to the day, our scripture is a song of praise for all creation, for the God who brought it into being and placed us in it. The Lord who shaped the heavens above us is at work down here on earth as well. There is nothing beyond the reach of God’s grace, from the greatness of the galaxies to the smallest living creature. God is active all around us, giving life and meaning
to the whole of creation. Psalm 8 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Here, There, and Everywhere.”

June 19, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Coming Home”
Sermon: sermon
In this week’s gospel Jesus encounters a man who is lost and alone. He lives among the tombs outside the city and is tormented by many spirits. The healing that follows his meeting with Jesus causes anxiousness and fear in the surrounding community, where people worry about what it means. They ask Jesus to leave, and he does. But the man returns home to tell everyone what God has done for him. Luke 8:26-39 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Coming Home.”

June 26, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Forward”
Sermon: sermon
This week’s gospel records a number of Jesus’ sayings while he and the disciples travel on the road to Jerusalem. Some who have followed him are wondering where they are going. Others are resisting his invitation. Jesus is keenly focused on the path ahead, knowing where it leads. He wants his disciples to know that the future requires their full attention as well. Luke 9:51-62 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Forward.”
