7/25/10 – Jonathan Chute – “The Pray-er”
Sermon – The Pray-er
Luke 11: 1-10. The disciples have observed Jesus praying many times, but this is the first time they indicate an interest in learning to pray themselves. The picture of prayer that Jesus offers is one of persistence on our parts and generosity on God’s part. We pray not on our own, but as part of a community, in relationship with each other.

Sermon – The Color of Love
Luke 10: 38-42. In the story of Mary and Martha, two sisters welcome Jesus into their home. One busily goes about doing the work of the hostess while the other sits at his feet and listens to him, causing tension between the sisters. Jesus seems to indicate that listening is “the better part.” What does that mean for those who give of themselves by serving others? Didn’t Jesus say that is important too?

Luke 10: 25-37: In today’s text, Jesus responds to a lawyer’s question with one of his most well-known parables, the Good Samaritan, in the hopes of bringing to life a picture of God’s coming kingdom and what his life and future means for them.

7/4/10 – Jonathan Chute – “Interdependence Day”
Sermon – Interdependence Day
Luke 10: 1-11: In this week’s gospel Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him, to help prepare the way for the work he plans to accomplish. They go out in pairs, taking almost nothing with them. They will learn to depend on each other, on the hospitality of those they go to serve, and on what they have learned from him so far. Also, it’s the Fourth of July, a day to give thanks for the courage and sacrifice of those who gave birth to our nation. Like the Disciples, they could never have imagined where their efforts would lead, but they put in place a set of principles and practices that have led us for the more than 200 years since.
