February 6, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Into the Deep”
Sermon: sermon
In this week’s gospel we find Jesus preaching by the sea. Surrounded by an eager crowd, he gets into a boat and puts out from the shore. When he is done speaking he encourages the fishermen, whose boat he has been using, to move into deeper water, and to let down their nets. When they do, the catch is so large it threatens to sink them all. Peter is overwhelmed by the power of God at work in Jesus, and sees himself in a new light. Luke 5:1-11 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Into the Deep.”

February 13, 2022 – April Herron, “Speaking From a Level Place”
Sermon: sermon
In Luke’s gospel, the section of Jesus’ teachings known as “the sermon on the plain” begins with a series of blessings and warnings. The form of these statements is familiar to the listeners, but the content reverses their expectations. Through his actions, Jesus has been healing and helping the people who come to see and hear him. Now, with his words, he continues his work by trying to convey an accurate understanding of how they are viewed in the eyes of God. The gospel reading is Luke 6:17-26. April’s sermon title is, “Speaking From a Level Place.”

February 20, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Tit for Tat”
Sermon: sermon
In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus offers a picture of life that might seem beyond most of us. When we are confronted by evil, he tells us to give love in return. We find it hard enough, at times, even to love our neighbors. But Jesus invites us to love our enemies. He understands that his followers will face opposition and threats. But he wants us to remember that it is God’s grace that sets the terms of our relationships with others. They may treat us unjustly, but God is still in charge. Luke 6:27-38 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Tit for Tat.”

February 27, 2022 – Jonathan Chute, “Listen to Him”
Sermon: sermon
The gospel for this week describes one of the more mysterious events in the life of Jesus. He takes Peter, John and James up a mountain to pray. While he is praying, something takes place that defies description. The disciples witness with amazement as Jesus is transfigured before their eyes. His face changed, and his clothes turned bright white. Moses and Elijah appear and talk with him. Peter stumbles over his words as he tries to make sense of what is happening. A cloud overshadows them all and fills them with terror. A voice speaks from the cloud, telling the disciples to listen to Jesus. Stunned to silence, they follow Jesus down the mountain and back to a troubled and broken world. Luke 9:28-43 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Listen to Him.”
