2/22/15 – Doug Dickson – “Back to Our Nature”
Sermon: Sermon
It is the first Sunday in Lent and we hear of the promise God makes following the flood never to destroy the earth by water again. In fact, God more than promises-God covenants not to flood the earth again and offers the rainbow as a sign of God’s pledge. Perhaps the most interesting piece of God’s covenant is with whom God enters into contract. The text for Doug’s sermon is Genesis 9:8-17, and his title is “Back to Our Nature.”

2/15/15 – Jonathan Chute – “Retrospectacle”
Sermon: Sermon
This week is Transfiguration Sunday, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Our gospel describes one of the most strange and mysterious events in the life of Jesus. He takes three of the disciples with him to the top of a high mountain. Once there, his appearance changes dramatically. His clothes become bright white, and he is joined by Moses and Elijah. Peter sees the three of them talking and tries to make sense of it. But he cannot understand what is happening. Then a cloud overshadows all of them and God’s voice speaks from the cloud. Overwhelmed by fear, the disciples fall to the ground. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Mark 9:2-9, and his title is “Retrospectacle.”

2/08/15 – Jonathan Chute – “The Tipping Point”
Sermon: Sermon
This week Jesus experiences a growing response to his healing work in Galilee. All kinds of people are coming out to see him, including those who are struggling and sick. The disciples are excited by this success. Early one morning he goes out by himself to pray. The disciples track him down. They want him to know how many people are waiting to see him. But Jesus does not seem to be interested in numbers or popularity. Something else is at stake. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Mark 1:29-39, and his title is “The Tipping Point.”

2/01/15 – Jonathan Chute – “The Teacher”
Sermon: Sermon
Once Jesus had gathered his disciples he went right to work. His early ministry often included teaching about the kingdom of God – this time in a local synagogue. While his actual words are not reported, their impact is powerful. The people sense his authority. Even a demonic spirit recognizes him. The demon confronts Jesus, threatened by his presence. First he silences, and then casts out the demon, and the people are astonished. He demonstrates an authority and power they have not seen before. Jesus is a teacher, but not like anyone else they know. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Mark 1:21-28, and his title is “The Teacher.”
