Sermon – Surrounded
Mark 9:2-9 – In today’s scripture, Mark shares with us his account of the transfiguration of Jesus. Here we find Jesus taking Peter, James and John to the top of a mountain where he is miraculously transfigured before them. It is at this moment that they encounter some unexpected visitors, which causes Peter to exclaim, “It is good for us to be here.”

Kathey Wilborn – “Hope Moments” – Hope Moments
Mark 1:29-39. The gospel for this week tells the story of a healing – and its effect on Jesus’ ministry. He meets a man who begs to be cured of his leprosy. Jesus responds, but asks the man to keep quiet about what has happened. Instead, he goes around the area telling everyone what Jesus has done. As a result, Jesus can no longer travel around so easily. It is just one of a series of hope-filled actions that he carries out in these early days of his ministry.

Sermon – Lost in the Crowd
Mark 1:29-39. This week Jesus’ popularity really begins to get out of hand. He heals the mother-in-law of his new disciple, Simon. But when others hear what has happened they surround the house where he and his friends are staying. After a long evening of healing the sick Jesus goes out to pray in the early morning. He seems to want to be alone. But even in the darkness of the desert the disciples pursue him. They want him to go back, to continue the work of healing. But Jesus knows that his work will take him beyond the needs of one small town, and he tells his disciples that they must move on.

Sermon – AMAZING Grace
Mark 1:21-28. Jesus begins teaching and healing in the local synagogue. His words, while not recorded, bring about a strong reaction there. People say “what’s this – a new teaching, with authority!” And a man with a demonic spirit cries out, wanting to know what Jesus will do. When he casts out the demon from the man, the people are amazed and astonished again. Today, lots of people see their faith as a quiet part of their lives. We don’t tend to expect to be amazed very often. But that’s not the story we encounter in scripture, and especially in Mark’s gospel
