Sue Monk Kidd is well known for her writings pertaining to faith and spirituality, as well as for her novels, especially The Secret Life of Bees. In 2020 she published The Book of Longings, which takes as its premise the possibility that Jesus was married. While the idea seems far-fetched, the novel makes a surprisingly plausible case of “how it might have been” for him and for his wife if he had been joined in love and partnership with one special person. Kidd has stayed true to Biblical accounts of the life of Jesus and focuses her story on the woman, whom she names Ana, who joins her life to his before he begins to travel the land and gather disciples. Readers will gain an interesting perspective on what life may have been like for women in that era of history, as well as for women whose lives intersected with Jesus’ life.
Our discussion will take place on Monday, May 24, at 7 p.m. Please send an email to April@rhumc.org so that she can plan on your participation.
