After Jacob demanded a blessing from God, He gave Jacob a new name, Israel, because his relationship with God and his self-identity were changed. August 16, 2026 – “A God Who Goes Before”

During my freshman year of high school, our theater department put on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. My audition for the show was a spectacular failure, and I did not even make it into the 80 person chorus. Nonetheless, I went to see the show on opening night. I loved it so much, I went again three more times that week. Joseph remains one of my favorite musicals. As we continue our journey through Genesis – the book of beginnings – we arrive at the beloved character of Joseph. The technicolor dreamcoat was destroyed many years ago, and Joseph has been in Egypt a long time. In reuniting with his long-lost family, we begin to see how Joseph thinks about the presence of God in a life that didn’t go to plan… or did it? August 23, 2026 – “Well Behaved Women”

One of the comments that I’ve received several weeks in a row now is “I remember this story from Sunday School, but I’ve never given it much thought as an adult.” You’ve probably noticed that I love to preach from the Old Testament lessons in the Bible. These are stories that we spend a lot of time with as children, but when we read them as adults, they have so much more to offer us. We spent about four weeks with Jacob, had a brief moment with Joesph, and now we move onto Moses and the Exodus story. But at the beginning of Moses’s story are two sets of women who embody the prevenient grace of God. The midwives and Pharoah’s daughter allow baby Moses a chance. August 30, 2026 – “The Miracle of the Mundane”

Few biblical call stories match the dramatic power of Moses, yet his divine interruption came during the most mundane, routine task of his day. After transitioning from the luxury of Pharaoh’s palace to the isolation of the desert, Moses became things he never imagined: a fugitive, a murderer, and a forgotten exile quietly tending his father-in-law’s sheep. Stripped of status and privilege, Moses remained faithful to his ordinary routines—and it was precisely through this quiet preparation that God equipped him for a grander plot. At 80 years old, an age when many believe their best days are behind them, Moses answered the call and spent the next forty years serving the Lord. What are the unglamorous yet necessary tasks you are carrying out today? Could it be that God is inviting you to discover the sacredness hidden within your daily routine?
