April 7, 2019 – Jonathan Chute “Perishable”
Sermon: sermon
In this week’s gospel Jesus is at a dinner with friends. Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead, is also with him at the table, along with his sisters Mary and Martha. Jesus knows that his time is short. The opposition to his work is growing. In the midst of this difficult moment in his ministry, Mary shares with him a most generous gift. Not everyone is pleased. The text for Jonathan’s sermon, “Perishable,” is John 12:1-8.

April 14, 2019 – Jonathan Chute “For Free”
Sermon: sermon
Palm Sunday launches the week at the heart of the Christian year. Our services open with the waving of palm branches and the joyful procession of children. Our gospel includes a series of readings from the last days of Jesus’ life. In the midst of the chaos of his arrest, trial and crucifixion, we are reminded of the central themes of his life. He remains faithful under pressure, refusing to be swayed by fear. He offers forgiveness and hope even from the cross. The text for Jonathan’s sermon, “For Free,” is found in Luke 22 & 23.

April 21, 2019 – Jonathan Chute “The Unusual Suspects”
Sermon: sermon
Easter celebrates that God’s grace and love overcome the forces of sin and death. We see a sign of resurrection in the return of Spring that fills the sanctuary with beautiful flowers. We sing “Alleluia!” and dare to hope in the truth of this good news. Yet the story of that first Easter show’s us that even Jesus’ followers were at least as confused as they were hopeful on the morning of the resurrection.
Early in the morning the women come to the tomb, bringing spices and oils to anoint the body of their friend. But when they arrive they find that the stone has been rolled away and Jesus’ body is missing. The women have no idea what to make of their discovery. A pair of angels appears and reminds them that Jesus had told them he would rise from the dead. They go to tell the others what they’ve seen and heard. But their story seems impossible. No one believes them. Even among Jesus’ closest followers the joy of Easter is a tough sell. Luke 24:1-12 is the text for Jonathan’s sermon, “The Unusual Suspects.”

April 28, 2019 – April Herron “Reaching for Life”
Sermon: sermon
Our scripture reading for Sunday, April 28, reveals that Easter is not just a day; it is an on-going new reality. The text from John’s gospel describes how Jesus came to the house where the disciples were gathered on the evening of the day we now know as the day of resurrection. But it was not just a one-time visit. Jesus came back again the next week, same time and same place. Each time, Jesus emphasized his gift of peace. Each time, he made himself available to be seen and touched. Each time, he encouraged the disciples to take up their ministry. Each time, his encounter with the disciples resulted in growth of their faith, joy, and understanding.
Our celebration of Easter continues with John 20:19-31, with happy hymns, and with the opportunity to be together as an encouraging community. April’s sermon title is, “Reaching for Life.”
