In this week’s gospel Jesus tells a story of preparation and readiness. Ten bridesmaids are waiting to meet the groom, who arrives for the wedding much later than expected. Because of the delay, five of them do not have enough lamp oil to last the night. Just before he appears they go out to shop for more oil. By the time they return the doors of the hall are locked and they end up missing the feast. The text for Jonathan’s sermon is Matthew 25:1-13, and his title is “Don’t Be Late!”
We’re also celebrating our annual Heifer Plus Mission Sunday, with a wide range of alternative Christmas gifts available for purchase or donation in Wesley Hall. Heifer Project International, Habitat for Humanity, as well as our own missionaries will be represented. Of course Fletcher Larson’s popular pickles will be available for purchase. We’ll also have a selection of paintings donated by area artists in a silent auction, and a number of beautiful oriental rugs, donated by a church family. The proceeds from these will go to UMCOR’s hurricane relief efforts in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean.
It is the Veteran’s Day weekend, so we’ll give thanks for our veterans and active duty members of the armed forces this Sunday. During worship we’ll ask veterans to stand and be identified by branch of service. We have many veterans and active duty members of our congregation, and many reasons to thank them for their service to our nation.
See you at church!
