A lot of things I used to do in the weeks before Christmas have gone by the wayside. Once upon a time, I sent Christmas cards. For most of my life, I was in the habit of choosing and decorating a tree. During their growing-up years, I guided my kids in the use of an Advent calendar. We enjoyed special Christmas picture books and played with cloth or wooden crèche scenes. Grandmothers took the lead on baking sessions in my kitchen. My life is different now. The technologies available for communication are different too. Letting go of certain traditions has simplified November and December for me. And it is also true that I still like to find ways to mark the season. That’s why I am looking forward to the Advent Bible Study that Cindy McCoy and I are leading this month.
Our exploration of the world of Advent will meet on Tuesday mornings, from 10:30 am to noon, in the Aldersgate room, on December 5, 12 and 19. Each session will involve some scripture study, personal reflection and sharing, creative activity, laughter, and prayer. You will leave class with some ideas for ways to be attentive to God’s presence throughout the week. You are welcome to come to one, two, or all three class sessions. Each will cover different material, and will also be a complete experience in itself. Our time together will increase our anticipation and sense of celebration for the coming of Christ into the world. I will be glad to share the Adventure with all who are able to be present!
With prayers for peace on earth,
